The Pediatric and Congenital Unit of the University Hospital of Martinique (Centre Hospitalier et Universitaire de Martinique) works as a recognized and dedicated Inter Regional Tertiary Care Center for all Complex Congenital Heart Diseases (CHD)
- Due to its particular central Caribbean location, the Pediatric Cardiac Program developped at the UHM is involving many children from accross Martinique, French Guadeloupe, French Guyana and beyond, with serious congenital or acquired Heart Problems
- Thanks to major medical and surgical progress patients with complex CHD live longer life in a most better condition
- Around one in 100 children are born with a heart defect, 50% requiring Surgery or Interventional cardiac catheterization to survive. Those who need surgery or a procedure in the Catheter Lab are most often under 1 year old, and a quarter are less than 2-months old
Despite the fact that we do not currently offer Cardiac Surgery in neonates or small children, our Pediatric Cardiology Program is a key point of the CHD network over the French Caribbean territories as well as French Guyane. Thus, it is the only Centre in the area that is able to provide 24/24:
- Fetal Heart Expertise (Level III)
- Diagnostic and Interventional Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization, the latter often used as a rescue treatment in order to recover from a critical condition that sometimes happens during neonatal period
- Accurate and Complete diagnosis nor follow-up of the most severe Complex CHD
- Accurate management of severe myocardiopathies affecting infants or children
- Cardiac MRI, in collaboration with the Radiology Department
- Fully equiped ICU with dedicated beds, in collaboration with all ICU's teams
- Management of adults with complex CHD such as Univentricular Hearts
- ECMO/ECLS support, currently with a weight respect > 15 Kg (should drop to 10 kg within the next 2 years) under the management of the Cardiothoracic Surgical team
- Cardiac surgery for mostly "simple cases" so far (Cardiothoracic Surgery)
The goal of our very specialized team is to provide the best possible care for fetus, infants, children, and adults with all forms of congenital and acquired heart disease with highly competent, skilled, and knowledgeable health care services guided by respect for our patients and families
